How to Lay Concrete Flags

Concrete flags, or pavers, as they are often called, are popular materals for walkways and patios. They come in a wide variety of styles that range from brick to natural stone appearance. They are a versatile landscaping material and are not difficult to lay once all of the ground preparation has been completed. A foundation of gravel and sand needs to be prepared for the flags to rest on. The foundation provides a stable and level surface which is needed for a patio or walkway.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray an outline of the area where you would like to install the concrete flags with landscaping spray paint.

    • 2

Dig out the outlined area to a depth of 4 to 6 inches using a shovel. Lay landscape edging around the edges of the outlined area. Fasten it in place by driving the spikes, included with the edging, through the edging at a downward angle into the ground every 24 inches along the perimeter using a hammer.

    • 3

Fill in the dug out area with 4 inches of pea gravel. Rake the surface smooth using a bow rake. Tamp the surface by striking it evenly with the plate of a tamper.

    • 4

Lay the flags down inside the dug out area end to end in rows. Tap uneven flags into place with a rubber mallet.

    • 5

Dump a pile of sand onto the surface and brush it into the joints between flags with a shop broom. Sweep off the excess sand.
