Locate the deepest spot of your property. This is the place where the most water will settle after a heavy rain. Take advantage of the rain to watch how the water flows on your property. Make note of the high spots as well as low spots. While the low spots are the wet places, high spots are where the water is held in.
Allow the property to dry. A skid loader's weight makes it difficult to use on muddy ground. Allow at least a week after a big rainfall before renting the equipment.
Drive the skid loader across the high spots in your property with the blade pushing the dirt into the low spots. Ideally, you want to create a V-shaped groove in the ground, with the bottom of the V positioned on a downward slope away from your home and toward an existing drainage ditch or pond.
Check that you have created a slightly downhill slope with the skid loader, using a water level or a laser level. When finished, re-seed the lawn to plant the bare ground.
