How to Do Borders With Landscaping Bricks

Landscaping with bricks provides your lawn with a bold and structured look. Laying the bricks as borders around gardens, flower beds or beside a cement sidewalk frames the individual sections of your yard, giving it a sophisticated flair. Bricks come in different colors, allowing you a variety of choices to mesh with other shades in your landscape. With the appropriate tools, you can turn a dull lawn into the envy of the neighborhood.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake leaves and remove twigs or debris from the area you want to place the bricks.

    • 2

Shovel dirt from the area to place the brick border. Dig the depth 2 to 3 inches and 2 inches wider than the brick for the width. Place the extra dirt into a wheel barrel and save it to place into low dips in the yard.

    • 3

Stamp the soil inside the trench with your feet or with a tamping tool or hoe. Compact the soil tightly within the trench.

    • 4

Spread 2 to 3 inches of fine-granulated sand into the entire trench. Compact the sand by pressing with the tamping tool or hoe, creating a firm base in which to set the brick.

    • 5

Place each brick into the trench, butting them against each other and against the trench wall nearest to the outside, leaving a small gap between the brick and the trench wall next to the landscaped area. If one brick appears unlevel, remove it and pour 1 to 2 tsp. of sand into the trench. Lay the brick back inside the trench and level it.

    • 6

Fill in the gap between the brick and the one side of the trench wall with sand. Fill the gap until it's flush with the brick. Push the sand into the trench with your hoe or tamping tool to squeeze out any air bubbles.
