Apply glyphosate, an herbicide, directly to the foliage of torpedo grass in the fall of the year. Many other plants and grasses enter dormancy at this time of year, so the bright green blades of the torpedo grass make it easier to see.
Select a backpack sprayer if you have a large area of torpedo grass. A hand-held applicator will work well for spot treatments or to control minor incursions of the grass.
Adjust the spray nozzle to adequately coat the blades and stems of the plant. A spray tip that emits a fan-shaped spray works well. The amount of herbicide to use depends on the amount of torpedo grass you need to treat. Always follow the recommended amounts shown on the manufacturer's label.
Spray torpedo grass from the bottom of the plant to the top, and, for dense growths, spray from side to side. After two days, the grass will turn yellow and begin to exhibit stunted growth.
Reapply the herbicide in two weeks to treat any grass you may have missed during the first application.
