How to Landscape the Entrance of a Ranch Style House

Ranch style houses set the architectural tone in many suburbs. Unfortunately, without landscaping, these homes are prone to look bland, uninteresting and even ugly. Some creative and well-planned landscaping around the entrance can transform a run-of-the-mill ranch house into a visually engaging and pleasant home. If it's important to you to give a good first impression, then the entrance is the place to do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant climbing ivy along the front walls of the ranch house. Cover up the unattractive vinyl or aluminum siding that many ranch houses are saddled with and replace it with beautiful green leaves and flowers. Plant sweet peas, morning glory or clematis along the front wall and hang strings from the soffits to give it something to climb.

    • 2

Plant evergreen shrubs around the front door and porch to soften the lines of the house at the entry. Evergreens will keep their needles year round, so you won't be confronted with bare branches all winter.

    • 3

Dig up the lawn around the entry and replace it with a dense flowerbed. Plant a variety of flowers that have different blooming times so you can enjoy nice colors throughout the growing season.

    • 4

Install a low retaining wall if your house is located on a slope or hill. Backfill behind the retaining wall to create a flat area where you can put in plantings without fear of erosion.
