How to Landscape a V-Shaped Area in the Backyard

A V-shaped garden plot can be challenging to landscape but will be a beautiful addition to your backyard when care and attention are given to the design. Whether you choose to landscape with culinary and medicinal herbs, colorful flowers, plants that attract birds and butterflies, or a combination of themes, landscaping a V-shaped area takes careful planning. However, a well-planned garden improves your home's value, reduces soil erosion and conserves natural resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the garden area with a measuring tape, recording the length of each side.

    • 2

Sketch the outline of the garden to scale on paper with a pencil.

    • 3

Conduct a site evaluation, checking the number of hours the area receives direct sunlight, what type of soil is in the garden, how well water drains from the area and the garden's topography.

    • 4

Choose a garden theme and a list of plants to include in the garden based on their compatibility with the information from your site evaluation.

    • 5

Add the plants to your garden sketch. Keep shorter plants to the front of the garden and taller plants to the rear, allowing enough space between plants for good growth. The point of a V-shaped garden is narrow. Ground cover plants are short enough for the front of the garden, but they will eventually spread past the garden boundaries. A small bush-type plant, like a miniature rose, curly-leaf parsley, marigolds or zinnia, fit well into the small area.

Add mulch walkways or decorative pavers to provide access to all areas of the garden for easy maintenance. A decorative paver, plaque or piece of garden art can be placed in the "V" instead of a plant as a visual focal point.
