How to Build a Berm for Landscaping

Landscape design is a three-dimensional concept that takes into account the height and spread of your plantings. One way to give more depth to your landscape is to add a berm. This is nothing more than a mound of soil for planting, but it will completely change the look of your landscape. The berm can be sized and contoured to fit your needs, and used to frame or screen views. Regardless of the size or shape, a berm adds a new dimension to your landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle flour to outline the perimeter of the berm.

    • 2

Dig up sod within the outline and remove it from the area.

    • 3

Install edging around the perimeter of the berm. This can be wood, plastic, concrete or rock, depending on the style that best fits the landscape design. Edging keeps the soil from eroding into the surrounding lawn.

    • 4

Shovel soil to fill the bottom of the berm, and pack it down by walking on it.

    • 5

Add soil to fill the center of the berm to create a sloping mound. A maximum height of 18 to 24 inches usually looks best. When you are satisfied with the shape of the berm, you are ready to add plants and mulch.
