How to Prevent the Downhill Erosion of Soil

Erosion is a problem that anyone with a hill has to try and solve. Water moves over the soil on a slope faster than normal and causes ruts and soil displacement that makes the area uneven. If you are dealing with a sloped area or hill in your yard, you have a few options to try and prevent erosion from continuing.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a terrace effect in the hill. Cut into the hill to form flat areas, and plant vegetation on the flat spaces. The plants absorb most of the water that settles on each section.

    • 2

Place plants, trees and tall grasses at staggered points all along the hill. This breaks up the flow of water. Smaller streams means less erosion or ruts. The plants take in water as it flows over the surface

    • 3

Dig into the hill at different points and install large rocks. Plant vegetation around and between the rocks. The water flows to each of these points and is broken up by the rock placements, then absorbed by the vegetation.

    • 4

Plant grass plugs on the hill. Use a grass that grows by runners, such as centipede or Bermuda, so it grows out from the plugs without having to put out new seed or a slow spread.
