How to Arrange Swirls in Landscape With Rocks

A rock garden, or a flower bed with rock accents, can be a pleasing addition to your garden. Landscaping rocks come in a variety of different colors and sizes and can be arranged in many different ways. One unique idea for a rock garden is swirling different colors of rocks together. With a little time, patience and some edging, you can create a complicated swirl pattern in your rocks that will be easy to maintain.

Instructions

Mark off the area where you want the rocks to go. Use spray paint to draw out your swirls as well as the surrounding border for the landscaping rocks. The spray paint will wash off the grass when it rains or when you water the lawn.

    • 2

Bury the landscaping edging. Use a shovel to dig in a trench for your edging. Start with the swirl pattern and arrange your edging in your desired pattern. Tamp the soil back down around the edging so that it will not lean. Once the swirl pattern is done, bury the landscape edging around the exterior of the area. The landscaping edging will keep all of the rocks in place and further delineate your swirl pattern.

Pour in the first color of rocks into the swirl pattern. Pour the gravel carefully so that it does not escape the border you've set down. If some pieces do fall over the side of your edging, scoop them back over into the correct spot.

Add in the second color. Pour out your other color of gravel into the remaining area. Use a rake to smooth out all of the gravel and cover any bare spots.

Wet the gravel down. Gravel usually comes with sand and fine pieces of smaller rocks. This will settle over time. Watering it down assists the settling process and helps you see if you need to add more gravel in spots or further rake it to make it even.
