Dry peat moss is extremely lightweight, weighing around 950 lbs. per cubic yard. This form absorbs up to 150 to 3,000 percent of its weight in water. Always soak dry peat moss in water before using in the garden or landscape.
Wet peat moss is heavier than the dry form since it is at least 80 percent water. When buying peat moss by weight, it is more economical to purchase it in the dry form.
Dry peat moss can rob plant roots of their moisture when allowed to dry out, so keep peat moss damp. Do not use peat moss as surface mulch since it is easily blown away by the wind.
