Can I Put Down Fresh Cut Wood Chips?

Nearly any type of organic material makes beneficial mulch. Tree bark and wood chip mulches are commonly sold in bags at garden supply stores. These products are graded for consistency in size, type and color. Fresh-cut wood chips are usually available because of cutting down trees and contain chips of varying sizes, as well as small twigs, leaves and other debris. These chips make good mulch, even though the resulting appearance won't be as uniform as with commercial products.
  1. Economics

    • A supply of freshly cut wood chips is often the result of having a tree cut down on one's own property. In this case, the chips are free. Many tree service companies deliver fresh chips at little or no cost, if you are near the area where they are working. The only disadvantage is you'll need to take a full truckload and many homeowners can't use that much mulch at one time.

    Landscape Benefits

    • A thick layer of wood chips in planting beds helps prevent weed growth, retains moisture in the root zone and improves the landscape's overall appearance. Maintain the mulch layer at a depth of 4 inches for the best results.

    Soil Enhancement

    • The levels of organic matter and nutrients in the soil increase as the wood chips decompose. Higher levels of organic matter improve water infiltration and retention. The additional nutrients will improve plant health and increase the growth rate.

    Cautions

    • Do not place mulch against the trunks of trees and shrubs. The constantly moist environment invites insect and disease organisms to attack the base of the plant. Wood chips are probably not the best choice for annual beds or vegetable gardens. As wood decomposes, it pulls nitrogen from the soil surface and may cause a deficiency in shallow-rooted plants. Trees and shrubs have deeper root systems that will be unaffected. Wood chip mulch that contains much leafy material breaks down faster than mulch consisting solely of chunks of wood. Replenish the mulch layer as needed to maintain a 4-inch depth.
