DIY: Styrofoam Terrarium Rock

A terrarium is a closed living space that fosters the growth of plants, animals or both. If the environment of your terrarium is looking a little barren, however, you can add homemade stylized rocks. Styrofoam rocks will add a unique element to your ecosystem and are safe for the plants and animals inside. Even those inexperienced with building rocks can complete the project in under 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a few sheets of newspaper on a flat, open workspace.

    • 2

Break apart the Styrofoam material into small, irregularly shaped pieces. The more irregular, the better. You can break apart the Styrofoam with you hands and then use a utility blade to fashion the pieces further to your liking.

    • 3

Line up the pieces of Styrofoam onto the newpaper sheets and space them a few inches apart from each other.

    • 4

Remove the cap on the rock-texture spray paint and hold the nozzle 5 to 6 inches from the Styrofoam.

    • 5

Spray the paint onto the Styrofoam pieces using a sweeping motion to evenly coat them.

    • 6

Wait 12 to 15 minutes for the paint to dry and then turn the Styrofoam pieces over so that the unexposed sides are facing upward.

    • 7

Coat the Styrofoam with the paint. Wait 15 minutes for the paint to dry before inserting the Styrofoam rocks into the terrarium.
