Does Annual Rye Inhibit the Growth of Other Plants?

Annual ryegrass is found in many turfgrass seed mixtures, as it protects less vigorous species while they establish. Its ability to outcompete weeds makes it a useful nurse crop, but it can become a nuisance.
  1. Characteristics

    • Annual ryegrass is a cool-season annual bunchgrass. It grows 3 to 4 feet with a dense root system that establishes well even in acidic soils and soils with low fertility.

    Value

    • The extensive root system of annual ryegrass aerates soil, opening it for oxygen and water. Its vigorous growth habit suppresses weeds, but it also competes with plants for water and nitrogen. Its wide blade is without aesthetic appeal in lawns.

    Management

    • Annual ryegrass has to be managed so that it doesn't spoil the uniformity of turf by outgrowing desirable species. It dies off in harsh winters and hot summers; without those conditions, it must be mowed frequently, or avoided in lawn seed mixes.
