Grass Killer That Won't Hurt Flowers

There are several techniques to remove unwanted grass without hurting flowers and plants around it. The techniques include newspapers, sweat equity and careful application of a topical herbicide.
  1. Newspaper and Mulch

    • Grass is smothered with black and white newsprint laid 10 sections thick and covered with 4 inches of wood mulch. Water the mulch to keep it from blowing away. After a few weeks the grass is dead and the newspaper is decomposing.

    Mechanized Removal

    • A sod cutter or skid steer loader, such as a bobcat, can remove the grass quickly. Sod cutters are best for small areas. The toothed bucket will lift sod up, saving hours of manual labor.

    Glyphosate

    • Glyphosate -- sold under the names Roundup, Kleenup, Kill Zall, Com Pleet, Rodeo and Pondmaster -- has to be applied carefully. Edge the unwanted turf with a shovel; severing the roots will stop the herbicide from traveling through the roots to other plants. Use a low-pressure spray with a cardboard or metal shield, or a wick-type applicator, to protect other plants. Apply when it's unlikely to rain for 8 hours.
