Grass is smothered with black and white newsprint laid 10 sections thick and covered with 4 inches of wood mulch. Water the mulch to keep it from blowing away. After a few weeks the grass is dead and the newspaper is decomposing.
A sod cutter or skid steer loader, such as a bobcat, can remove the grass quickly. Sod cutters are best for small areas. The toothed bucket will lift sod up, saving hours of manual labor.
Glyphosate -- sold under the names Roundup, Kleenup, Kill Zall, Com Pleet, Rodeo and Pondmaster -- has to be applied carefully. Edge the unwanted turf with a shovel; severing the roots will stop the herbicide from traveling through the roots to other plants. Use a low-pressure spray with a cardboard or metal shield, or a wick-type applicator, to protect other plants. Apply when it's unlikely to rain for 8 hours.
