What to Do With Cobblestones in the Yard?

Cobblestones are square, hand-split pavers that hold up to heavy foot traffic and add organic appeal and timelessness to a landscape. Initially used to pave Old World streets, cobblestones are still used in modern yards and gardens. Whether recycled or newly manufactured, cobblestones can be utilized in many ways.
  1. Paths

    • Cobblestones have a flat surface that makes them ideal for paths and walkways. They are also quite versatile in style, fitting in well with modern urban landscapes as well as country settings. Salvaged cobblestones usually are made of granite and have a timeworn appeal, although they are difficult to find. New cobblestones are available at home and garden centers, and come in colors including gray, black, yellow and pink. Cobblestone paths should be constructed on a bed of gravel and sand.

    Edging

    • Cobblestones also make an attractive edging material for gardens and flower beds.To ensure durability, lay the cobblestones edge to edge on a 2-inch base of crushed gravel. For an area that is next to a lawn that requires mowing, the stones should protrude no more than an inch above the soil.

    Patios

    • Cobblestone patios have all the appeal and hard-wearing nature of brick, as well as a flat, even surface for foot traffic and furniture placement. Square or rectangular cobblestones come in many colors and may be laid in a variety of patterns, including basket-weave and herringbone. They give a patio a classic look.

    Combinations

    • Combine cobblestones with other materials to stretch your budget. Surround large, square concrete pavers with cobblestones to create a focal point in the yard. Place potted plants or a sculpture on top. Edge a gravel path or patio with cobblestones for a project that is much less costly than using cobblestone alone.
