Measure all straight borders of your backyard and record the measurements. If you have a rectangular-shaped yard, this consists of simply measuring the length and width and multiplying each measurement by 2.
Measure any edges of your yard that aren't straight lines by laying a string or rope down along the edge. Contour the string so that it follows the contour of the border of your yard. Mark the string to show where the border begins and ends. Then measure the string with a tape measure to find the length of the curved portion. Record these measurements as well.
Add the measurements of all of the borders of your backyard in order to find the perimeter. For example, if your yard is 100 feet long by 50 feet wide, add 100 plus 100 plus 50 plus 50 to get a perimeter of 300 feet.
