Landscaping Equipment to Remove High Weeds

When caring for your lawn, you want to remove as many of the high weeds as you can. The higher the weeds are, the longer their roots become. Those roots start to choke the roots of your grass and create brown spots. The equipment you will need to remove high weeds depends on how high the weeds have grown and how large the patch of weeds is.
  1. Line Trimmer

    • A line trimmer is a hand-held landscaping tool with a long arm and a cutting head at the end of the arm. The head is powered by either gas or electric, and it has a roll of plastic line inside. The line cuts away at the weeds, and the user can release more line by gently bouncing the line trimmer on the ground. Some manufacturers have eliminated the plastic line and instead use small, dull plastic blades.

    Lawn Mower

    • Your lawn mower can be used to remove high weeds so long as you adjust and use it properly. Start off removing the high weeds by adjusting the blade housing of your mower to its highest setting. The weeds can get tangled around the blade, so mow the weeds in small segments. You will have to occasionally tilt your mower back slightly to allow any excess weed that may be stuck in the blade housing to escape. Once you have the weeds down to a manageable level, put the blade housing back down to the height you want and mow the weeds down to the level of your lawn.

    Vertical Mower

    • Tall weeds that are gathered together in a large patch have created what is called thatch. Thatch can be extremely difficult for the standard weed-removing tools to handle, and that is why you should use a vertical mower for larger weed removal jobs. The vertical mower works in the same manner as a standard lawn mower except that the blade housing is vertical as opposed to horizontal. A vertical mower is designed to handle thick patches of high weeds and does not require the small segment approach a standard mower does.

    Gardening Claw

    • High weeds that occur sporadically can be removed by hand. But you need to remove the entire weed and its roots to prevent it from growing back. A gardening claw is a metal hand tool that looks like a small rake with sharp clawlike ends on it. You can use the claw to dig under the weed and pull it out by the root.
