How to Decorate Wooden Picket Fences

Paint the fence. As a homeowner, you can choose to paint your wooden picket fence any color you desire. Be sure to use an exterior wood paint and apply two coats of paint if necessary. You can paint it the color of your home, or an accent color that blends with your home. You can also alternate colors, by choosing two or three complementary colors and alternate colors between sections or pickets.

Plant climbing vines on the fence. There are numerous types of climbing vines available. If you decide to do this, plant the vines approximately 2 inches away from the bottom of the wooden picket fence. Water the plants regularly and as they begin to grow, drape them over the fence to ensure that they attach and grow properly to the fence. Tie them to the fence if necessary.

Use stencils. Purchase stencils in shapes of your choice, such as a moon, star or diamond. Copy them onto wood or plastic and cut them out using a stencil cutter or other wood-cutting tool. Paint the shapes if desired and attach them to the picket fence.

Purchase wooden or tin signs. Another way to decorate a wooden picket fence is by purchasing premade signs. You can choose a theme, such as gardening or outdoors, and purchase metal or wood signs. Decorate the fence by placing the signs in various places on the fence.

Use lawn ornaments. Buy pinwheels or other ornaments and place them around the fence to enhance the way it looks.

Paint murals on them. After painting the wooden fence sections, use exterior paint and decorate them by painting things on them, such as vines, birdhouses, flowers or symbols.
