Decorating Ideas for Outdoor Tall Planters

Incorporate tall outdoor planters into your backyard landscaping plans as well into your front yard or porch. Planters transform your yard into a hidden oasis by screening off areas of your property or adding special touches to water gardens or pond areas.
  1. Sectional Use

    • Use tall outdoor planters to create havens within your yard. Use four planters to create a "square" around a patio area or area you would like to create a seating area in. Use wood, metal, terra-cotta, ceramic or wicker planters depending on the look you would like to create. For example, use wicker or wood planters for a "natural" backyard featuring lots of wildflowers and wooden lawn furniture. Plant tall shrubs in the planters for creating more privacy or use fragrant flower varieties to give the air around your seating area a pleasant scent.

    Doorway Frames

    • Use tall outdoor planters to frame any type of door or entrance way. Plant them with small shrubs, tall flowers or grass varieties to frame your front door. Try using metal planters, particularly if your front porch furniture is metal. Frame assorted garden arbors with tall outdoor planters on each side or try woven wicker planters to complement the natural feel of woven branch arbors. Plant herbs such as lavender in planters for entrances to herb gardens or try hanging flower varieties to match hanging vines featured on arbors.

    Pond Decor

    • Tall outdoor planters can also go around a small natural or human-made pond. Since aquatic plants must be left in the water, use flowers and plants that are aquatic in theme, such as blue flower varieties, to complement the aquatic feel. Try blue Forget-Me-Nots, blue Cupid's Dart, blue Hydrangea and blue Rose of Sharon. Plant tall grass species in tall planters to partially hide your pond if desired and give it the feeling of a secret area or hideaway. Use blue ceramic planters or terra-cotta planters to maintain a natural feel.

    Holiday Ideas

    • Incorporate tall outdoor planters into your holiday decorating. Plant mini-spruce and other wintergreen trees throughout your yard if desired. Decorate each planter with its own Christmas theme, such as white and gold ornaments, nutcracker ornaments, "natural" ornaments made out of twigs and leaves, and any other theme you enjoy to make your own little Christmas tree village. Other ideas include leaving the planters after the Christmas season for creating Valentine's Day trees, Saint Patrick's Day trees and Halloween trees.
