Plastic Edging for a Playground

Creating a border in a playground area is both an aesthetic and functional challenge. Not only do borders visually define play spaces, but they also keep sand, mulch and other loose-fill playground materials in place while children run and jump around in it. For many years, wood landscaping ties were used for this purpose. However, the wood often rotted and became a nesting place for insects and rodents. Current edging products are made of plastic composite materials and will not warp, splinter or rot like wood -- making them an improved choice for edging playgrounds and other landscape projects.
  1. Plastic Timbers

    • Black plastic timbers create different sections in a playground.

Plastic timbers are a versatile product that requires no special skill to install. These products come in heights of 8 to 12 inches and lengths of 4 to 6 feet long. The interlocking ends overlap each other to snap together and are held in place with long spikes pounded in with a rubber mallet. Timbers come in a distinctive array of colors, including black, blue, green, red and yellow. They can also be moved and reassembled any time you wish to change the landscape.

    Plastic Flex Curb

    • Plastic flex curb is a plastic and rubber composite edging for playground activities. The product comes in heights of 3 to 8 inches and lengths of 8 feet. The beauty of these edging products is they can easily be flexed to accommodate custom curves in playground activities. Therefore, not only can they be used for holding sand or mulch in an area, they can also be used as rubber bumpers for wheeled track activities and are available with corrugated pipe cores to collect and channel water.

    Recycled Plastic Wood Planks

    • Recycled plastic planks resemble actual wood planks and even have a wood color and texture to them. They are made from recycled composite materials and mount with swiveling joints that allow you to install the planks in various angles and shapes. Unlike plastic timbers, which come in black or primary colors, plastic wood planks blend in with the natural landscape at do not call attention to the border. Plank kits come in 16- and 64-foot lengths with 5 1/2-inch planks and can be stacked during assembly for a higher border.

    Recycled Curved Borders

    • Recycled curved borders are similar to plastic wood planks. They have a wood color and grain and also mount with swiveling joints that allow you to swing the curved pieces into circular or S-shaped borders for a playground. These border kits come in 32-foot lengths measuring 6 inches tall. The curved shaped is visually pleasing and breaks up the rigid, straight-line look sometimes created with plank or timber borders.
