How to Install Perforated Plastic Corrugated Drain Pipes

Perforated drainage pipes are used for a variety of jobs around the house where it's essential to manage moisture and storm water runoff and is especially suitable for subsurface drainage for large areas where cost is a factor. Corrugated drain pipe is flexible and simple to install. Covering the pipe with geotextile cloth protects the perforations from being clogged with debris and sediment. Consult a professional before installing the pipe to ensure the plan is appropriate for the site.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Spirit level
  • Washed gravel, 1/2- or 1-inch size
  • Geotextile cloth
  • Perforated plastic corrugated pipe, 4 or 6 inches wide

      Excavate the trench at least 5 to 6 inches wide and 8 to 12 inches deep. Slope the trench so water flows away from structures to the discharge point. Check the slope with the level.

      Line the bottom of the trench with 2 inches of washed gravel. Lay geotextile cloth on top of the gravel.

      Lay the pipe with perforations down, and wrap the geotextile cloth around it. Fill around the pipe with at least 1-inch gravel on all sides, to grade level.

      For grass cover, fill gravel to a few inches below the surface and top with 3 to 4 inches of coarse sand to grade level. Plant with grass seed or let adjoining grass grow in.
