How to Grow Ground Ivy

Ground ivy is a fast-growing plant that can be used as a replacement for grass or as ground cover in areas where grass is impractical, such as steep slopes. The roots of ground ivy are shallow and fibrous, and the ivy’s numerous stems creep along the surface and extend out approximately 30 inches, forming a tangled group of stems. The flower stalks grow to be approximately 8 inches tall. Ground ivy spreads through its consistently spreading stems.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your cuttings, or container grow plants, in rows approximately 12 inches apart; the bottom 4 inches of your stem should be buried. Ivy plants do well in most environments but grow best in shady locations.

    • 2

Water your ivy plants approximately every three to four days, especially those located in direct sunlight. Placing a 3-inch layer of mulch over your plants will help keep them cool and retain the water.

    • 3

Put a light application of fertilizer over your ivy plants approximately four to six weeks after planting. Once the ground ivy has rooted, it will become very resilient. Once established, ground ivy is a very hardy plant.
