How to Landscape a Square Front Yard

The standard layout of residential streets produces a number of square front yards. Whether you want to create a symmetrical landscape to frame a front walkway, or add curves to soften the angles of the home and yard, adding the right features in strategic spots can give a unique, welcoming touch to the overall appearance of a landscape. Set a timeline that suits your budget and select materials that complement the character of your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a diagram of the front yard with a sheet of paper and pencil. Mark existing features like the driveway, trees and plants. Note where you want to add trees, shrubs and low-growing flowers for color. For instance, a tree on a bare side of the yard can balance large shrubs on the other side.

Frame the home by planting shrubs along the front of the home and off to the sides. Arrange the order of plants so smaller ones are by the front door and taller in the outer corners to focus attention on the entrance.

    • 3

Add curved flower beds at both ends of the driveway to contrast straight lines and angles. Choose flowers that won’t grow taller than 2 feet so they don’t block drivers’ sightlines to the street. Use a variety of flowers with different bloom times to bring ever-changing color to the front yard.

    • 4

Plant a tree in front of the home to draw the eye upward. A tree on each side of the house will create a formal symmetry, while a large tree on the opposite side from a cluster of hedges lends an asymmetrical, but balanced look.

    • 5

Install edging around the plant beds and driveway. Use the same material to unify these separate features with the home. For instance, flagstone edging brings out rugged qualities, while bricks accentuate a more traditional style.
