How to Make an Outdoor Landscape With a Windmill

A windmill on your property can help you predict the near-term weather by showing you the direction of incoming wind gusts, but that windmill can also serve as a decoration for your front yard. Choosing the right accessories and design elements for your windmill can turn that simple item into something distinctive.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a suitable spot in your landscape for the windmill. The perfect spot depends on a number of conditions, including the size of the yard and the design of the windmill, but the front yard is typically a suitable spot.

    • 2

Measure the bottom of the windmill and use that measurement to create the round area where you'll place it. Make the area for your windmill at least 6 inches wider than the windmill itself. This gives you room to decorate around the windmill and make it the centerpiece of your exterior decor.

    • 3

Prepare a round area that is adequately sized for the windmill plus any decorations you want to place around it. Cover that area with decorative stones, then trim the circle with larger rocks in a contrasting color. For instance, if you use beige stones in the interior of the circle, consider using jet black or dark brown rocks to trim the circle and make it stand out.

Measure the size of the finished circle, then use that measurement to place the windmill in the center of the circle. Set the windmill in place, then add a hanging basket filled with colorful flowers that provides a contrast to the stones surrounding it. For instance, a hanging basket full of bright red or purple flowers would provide a nice contrast to those beige decorative stones.

Plant a small circular patch of flowers at intervals around the windmill circle, or simply use large planting baskets. Fill those baskets or patches with colorful flowers to set off your windmill and make it stand out.
