Cabin Landscaping With Rocks & Bushes

The landscaping you do around a cabin can make the difference between a simple lodging and a rustic retreat. When you landscape the space around a cabin with rocks and bushes, it adds more than aesthetic value to the property. Proper landscaping can help create yard borders, provide shading and prevent soil erosion.
  1. Bushes for Shade

    • If you have areas around a cabin that need shade, bushes can provide a natural shading option. To create shading in areas in your landscape that get regular use, plant bushes around patios, porches and decks. Aside from providing shade, bushes can also help block the wind, which gives them a dual-purpose for both the winter and summer seasons. When selecting bush varieties for shade and wind-shielding, pick tall bushes that provide more coverage. You can also plant trees around the exterior of a cabin, which can insulate the walls from winds.

    Rocks for Borders and Walkways

    • Rocks may be used in a variety of ways in a landscape and generally blend in more effectively with the natural surroundings than bricks and other manufactured building blocks. Use rocks to mark the perimeter of a vegetable or flower garden or to line a walkway through the landscape. Rocks may also be used to build a garden wall or a raised flower bed. Rock walls less than 2 feet in height generally don’t require mortar or adhesive.

    Rocks and Bushes for Erosion

    • Any place where you use rocks or bushes in a landscape helps prevent erosion, because rocks and bushes impede both wind and water from moving across the surface of the landscape, which displaces soil. If you have areas near the cabin where soil erosion is an issue, like on slopes, you can create a blockade to help stop erosion by laying rocks side by side or planting a line of bushes across the slope.

    Decorative Rocks and Bushes

    • You don’t need a purpose for every rock or bush that you add to your landscaping. If you think that the rock or bush will enhance the look, you can place any landscaping piece for purely ornamental purposes. When placing bushes, ensure that the amount of space recommended o the plant’s care tag is available for the roots to grow. If you place rocks, keep the use of each space in mind and don’t place rocks where people may fall on them.
