How to Landscape a Backyard on a Hill With a Tall Porch

A flat backyard can make landscaping easier, but it can also be nice to have a slope and hill in the back of your home. If you have a tall hill and a tall porch behind your home, use that space to create focal points that draw the eye and create a unique look. Add a gazebo to the highest part of the backyard. Placing the gazebo high up on the hill gives a commanding view of the surrounding countryside, as well as your home and porch. You can purchase a kit and build a gazebo, build one from scratch, or purchase one ready-made and have it moved into your backyard.

Build a path of paving stones from your porch to the gazebo. You can choose a variety of different colored paving stones, or use a consistent color for all of the steps. The paving stone walkway is both decorative and useful. The path will be very useful when the yard is wet, since you will be able to walk on the stones and avoid tearing up the yard or damaging the grass.

Install a pond and waterfall in your backyard to provide a focal point and create a relaxing spot for yourself and your family. Build the pond into the side of the hill, placing the waterfall at the highest point. You can use a pond filter to move the water to the top of the waterfall and circulate it throughout the pond.
