How to Landscape With Arbors & Arches

Arbors and arches can be used in conjunction with climbing plants and flowers to accent and beautify your yard. For example, planting a hedge and incorporating an arch into it is a less expensive and more appealing option for a property boundary than a fence. Similarly, building an arbor in your yard provides you with a place to grow roses, grapes and many other climbing plants that thrive when they have a place to spread out that is off of the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Situate an arch at the point on your property line where you usually enter and leave the yard; use this arch as a focal point for landscaping along your property's border. Plant a hedge of medium-height shrubs, such as holly or lilac, on each side of the arch and install a flagstone walkway leading from the arch to the front door of your house.

Build an arbor in a sunny location on your property so that the plants you grow on the arbor can thrive. An arbor can be used for grapevines, roses or other climbing flowers, such as morning glory and clematis. Additionally, leave lots of space around the arbor so you can expand its size in the future if you decide to grow more varieties of climbing plants on it.

Plant a variety of climbing plants around your arches and arbors, including plants that bloom at different times of the year. This will help to keep the plants from competing with each other and will provide you with a progression of different blooms throughout the growing season.

Construct an arch on your favorite sitting spot and incorporate a bench in it to create a pleasant and attractive spot for relaxation. Grow fragrant perennials, such as daffodils, around this area.

Build an elongated arch that extends from the front of your property to your house to add a whimsical element to your property. After leafy vines have grown over its top, you will have a green tunnel that can be decorated with planted roses, hyacinths and pansies.
