How to Landscape Around a Front Porch on a Ranch Style House

Ranch houses are characterized by a single-floor layout and a low roof pitch. They tend to have large patios in the backyard rather than prominent front porches. If your ranch style house has a drab or unimpressive front porch, you can camouflage it and liven up the facade of your home with creative and beautiful landscaping. Choosing flowers, shrubs and trees that flower at different times of the year can create an ever-changing palette of colors throughout the growing season.

Instructions

    • 1

Soften the corners of the porch by planting evergreen shrubs at each corner. The advantage of evergreens is that they will maintain their look year round, preventing your home from looking barren in the winter.

    • 2

Lay a walkway of stone, brick or cement from the street or driveway to the front porch. If you do this first, you can then add flower beds and other plantings around the walkway over time.

    • 3

Dig up the lawn in front of the porch and around the evergreens that you planted at the corners of the porch. Replace the lawn in this area with rich topsoil and compost. Plant your favorite flowers in this area. Plant tall growing flowers toward the back and ground cover toward the front.

Put flower boxes on the railings of your porch. Plant climbing plants and ivy in the flower boxes and allow them to grow down the posts and railings. This will make your front porch look less stark and more inviting.
