How to Cap an Irrigation Head

Watering your landscape with an irrigation system is an environmentally friendly way to make the job easier than hand watering. When a sprinkler system is installed and cared for properly, the amount of water used to maintain the landscape is typically less. Monitor your system regularly to ensure it is working correctly, and make repairs or adjustments as needed. One common maintenance job for sprinklers is capping off a leaky or unused irrigation head.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply feeding the irrigation system. Disconnect the power going to the system.

    • 2

Dig around the irrigation head you need to cap until you locate the pipe connected to it. This should be within 12 inches beneath the head.

    • 3

Unscrew the irrigation head from the pipe. Replace it with the irrigation cap.

    • 4

Turn the water supply and power back on. Run the irrigation system to look for leaks around the cap.

    • 5

Fill the hole back in with the removed dirt, and then mark the location if you plan on using it again.
