How to Make a Stone Berm Border Around Shed

Landscapes in flat yards or around sheds benefit from the additional height a berm provides. A berm is simply a raised hill for planting in your yard typically used to create a border around a flowerbed, garden or building. The trick to creating a berm is keeping relatively low, otherwise you may end up creating an area that looks like there is something buried. You can prevent that from happening when you make a stone berm border around a shed. Build the berm up in the middle to plant bushes to partially conceal the side of the shed.

Instructions

  Make an outline of your berm border around the shed with white spray paint. Get creative and curve the lines a bit while keeping the size in perspective. Remember, a berm that is too big will look like a large mole has inhabited your yard.

  Dig out the grass along the outline of the berm with a shovel. Dig the trench 24 inches deep and 24 inches wide. The backside of the berm will butt up against the shed.

  Mix the soil and organic compost together in a wheelbarrow.

  Fill the bottom of the trench with the soil and compost mixture. Tamp down the soil firmly in the bottom of the trench. Continue filling the berm with soil until you create a gently sloping mound in the center.

  Put on your work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges on the stones. Add the landscaping stone to both sides of the trench. Line the rocks tightly next to each other to create the border. Use slightly larger stone on the backside of the trench to create more depth.

  Fill the trench with bushes, plants or trees. Plant trees deeper into the berm than you would plant small bushes or perennial flowers.
