How to Frame Lattice Skirting

Lattice skirting can add a sophisticated appeal to the area under a deck or porch. The skirting covers the empty space, giving the space a finished appearance. While the lattice can be nailed directly to the bottom edge of the porch, framing it first gives it added durability and prevents warping. Adding the frame is a simple process that can be performed by someone with basic carpentry skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your lattice skirting pieces. Cut four 1-by-4-inch boards, which will form the frame, based on these measurements.

    • 2

Arrange the four 1-by-4 boards into the shape of a rectangle. Attach the areas where the wood pieces meet by lining up corner joints, which are L-shaped pieces of metal, along the bottom sides of each corner. Install 3/4-inch screws in the corner joints.

    • 3

Position a 6-inch mending plate (a flat strip of metal) along the top edge where two frame boards meet. Screw the plate into place across the two frame boards for secure attachment of the frame. Place one mending plate at each spot where two boards touch.

    • 4

Lay your piece of lattice on the completed frame. Attach it to the frame by placing 1-inch panhead screws through washers throughout the border. Turn the frame over to install the skirting along the deck or porch.
