How to Add Curb Appeal With a Gabled Dormer Over a Porch

If you are installing a gabled dormer or already have one over your porch, you likely already appreciate the extra space it provides and the character it adds to the house's interior architecture. Outdoors, though, a dormer can be an eyesore. To create a house with good curb appeal, the dormer should appear as if it's original. To complete the look, the porch and landscape should be attractive as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a window for the dormer that is the same or looks similar as the rest of the windows on the front of the house. The trim around the window should match the other window trim as well. This helps the dormer appear as if it is original rather than an addition.

    • 2

Use the same roofing material on the dormer as you have on the rest of the house, including the porch roof. If the roofing material is different, the gabled dormer will look like an addition.

    • 3

Apply the same siding material on the dormer as the rest of the house. If necessary, repaint or add new siding to create a seamless look and enhance the home's curb appeal.

    • 4

Add window boxes planted with flowers below the dormer if the other windows on the front of the house also have window boxes. Window boxes can be installed under double-hung and inward-swinging casements but not outward-swinging casement windows.

    • 5

Create a polished look for the porch. For example, add a fresh coat of paint to the door. Polish or replace the door handle, mail slot and porch light fixture. Clean up any clutter and add potted plants on each side of the door. Add a new door mat and clean the windows.

    • 6

Landscape the garden and yard so it appears fresh and well-maintained. Pull weeds and reseed or re-sod, if necessary. Plant flowers and shrubs on the sides or in front of the porch to create a garden with curved edges to soften the landscape. Add mulch and a stone or brick border to the garden for a finished look.

Add lighting to improve the curb appeal at night. Line the driveway and walkways with solar lights. Use accent or spotlights to illuminate the garden or trees in the landscape. Additional lighting, including motion sensor lights, will also create a safer home environment.
