How to Install a Grass Starter Blanket

The process for seeding a lawn includes applying a mulch or covering, often hay, to help maintain moisture for seed germination. An alternative to hay is a grass starter blanket, also called a seed germination blanket. Using fine strips of aspen wood, instead of straw, the blanket is held together with a biodegradable netting on one side. The blanket helps reduce erosion, retain moisture and regulate temperatures, all of which promote successful seed germination.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the grass starter blanket down on the ground, starting in one corner of the seeded area. Pull the end of the blanket free from the roll and secure the corner in place with biodegradable stakes. Push a stake through the blanket and into the ground along the top edge, every 12 inches and at the corners.

    • 2

Roll out the grass starter blanket along the seeded area. Avoid walking on the seeds as much as possible. Insert a stake every 2 1/2 feet down the blanket and spaced 12 inches across. Repeat this spacing down the length of the blanket.

    • 3

Overlap the ends of the blankets by 12 inches when you add a new one. Keep the blankets as straight as possible. Secure the overlapped ends using the biodegradable spikes and the same 12-inch spacing.

    • 4

Secure the end of the last roll in a row by burying it with at least 6 inches of soil. Go back to the starting point and lay down a second row of the blanket. Place the side of the new row of blanket tightly against the side of the existing blanket row or overlap slightly on slopes or when winds could be an issue. Secure the second and subsequent rows with stakes spaced every 2 1/2 feet down the length and every 12 inches across.

Cut odd shapes and fill in pieces of the grass starter blanket with sharp scissors. Cut the shape slightly larger than needed to allow for overlap and secure the blanket in place with stakes.
