Types of Flexible Pond Liners

Flexible liners allow water gardeners to make their pond almost any shape--a benefit if the property has an odd shape and, therefore, is not suited for a molded liner. Flexible liners come in a variety of materials, strengths and prices.
  1. EPDM Liners

    • EPDM liners are made of synthetic rubber and are the best quality of the flexible liners. This liner is popular because of its strength and durability, but it is also one of the most expensive types of flexible liners.

    PVC Liners

    • PVC liners are made of flexible plastic. They are less expensive than the EPDM liners and more susceptible to punctures from rocks or birds pecking at the pond.

    Butyl Rubber Liners

    • The vulcanized, non-toxic Butyl flexible rubber liners are popular in Europe. They come in two thicknesses: .75 mm and 1.00 mm. The thinner liner requires an underlay sheet of spun polyester to help protect it against sharp-edged rocks.

    LLDPE liners

    • LLDPE liners are made from polyethylene and have many uses including water garden ponds. These liners come in a wide variety of thicknesses and are UV-, puncture- and chemical-resistant.

    Care

    • When the pond levels drop, the exposed perimeter of the liner can weaken and crack if left exposed to the sun's UV rays. Maintain the water level and place rocks, plantings and edge protectors to shield the liner.
