How to Build a Raised Garden With Garden Stones

Raised gardens or flower beds are ideal for gardeners who wish to control the soil content in their garden, create a flower bed that is easier to reach and maintain, control weeds, or add a structured appearance. While raised beds are often created using boards, garden stones are ideal for edging a bed. They lend a rustic appearance to your garden and do not deteriorate like wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer garden stakes around the area where you want to place your raised garden, then string twine around the stakes to outline the area.

    • 2

Dig up any grass, weeds or other plants from the area where your raised bed will go. Thoroughly till the soil.

    • 3

Dig a 3-inch-deep trench directly outside the perimeter of your garden stakes and twine. Fill the trench with 2 inches of gravel and pound it down with your mallet.

    • 4

Place your garden stones on top of the gravel in the trench, layering the stones so that the rocks on the second layer fill the gaps between rocks on the first layer, and the rocks on the third layer fill the gaps between rocks on the second layer, and so on. Repeat this process until you have created a border 18 inches to 2 feet tall.

    • 5

Remove your garden stakes and twine, then fill in your raised bed with garden soil. Add 1 part peat moss to every 3 parts garden soil to improve drainage.
