Backyard Pond Safety

Ponds are a nice addition to a landscaped backyard. They can be large or small, but certain safety precautions and local laws must be followed when installing any sized pond. It is much easier to prevent problems than it is to cope with someone getting hurt or property getting damaged.
  1. Permits

    • Many local jurisdictions require that you get a permit before installing a pond. Sometimes regular safety inspections are needed to make sure the pond complies with all regulations.

    Children

    • Locate your pond where it is unlikely to attract children. Be sure to notify any neighbors that have small children that you are installing a pond so they can be instructed on the proper safety precautions.

    Fences

    • In some areas, a fence around the pond is required if the pond is a certain depth. This prevents people from wandering into the water unexpectedly when it is dark or when there is heavy vegetation.

    Viewing Area

    • Provide a safe and secure viewing area for your pond. Create areas that are vegetation-free and can support the weight of people on the shore so it is possible to get close to the pond without falling in.

    Electricity

    • Many ponds require some kind of power source for lights and filters. Be sure to use a ground fault circuit interrupter and outlets that are rated for outdoor use around water to avoid shorts and electrocution.
