Select a fountain. There are many styles and sizes of fountain from which to choose. Decide if you want a formal or more relaxed look, a large and dramatic fountain, or a smaller accent fountain.
For the water in your fountain to maintain an even depth, the ground must first be leveled. Place a level over the proposed location. Grade the area with a rake until it is level. If necessary, remove high areas of dirt or fill in low areas using a garden shovel. Rake smooth.
Place stones or small boulders around the fountain. This will soften the lines of the fountain and add year-round interest. The rocks also compliment and anchor plants and flowers.
Choose a few perennial evergreens for year-round color. Ferns look beautiful around a fountain and love the added humidity. The tall arching leaves of the fern will grow and drape over your fountain, and add to the tranquility of the water. Select a few flowering perennials or annuals around the fountain as accents. Check the tags on the plants to determine if they need full sun or partial shade. Choose those that will thrive in the conditions in which you've placed your fountain.
Place your selected plants around the fountain while still in their pots. Arrange until you have a display you like. Remember your perennial plants will grow and spread; plant at the recommended distance apart. Water your plants well and enjoy your fountain.
