How to Repair a Tear in Greenhouse Plastic

Plastic greenhouses are ideal for capturing sunlight and creating a protected growing condition in which tender young plants can thrive. Over time, the plastic can tear or crack. Fortunately, tears and cracks are easy to repair. This simple project, which takes only a few hours, can extend the lifespan of your greenhouse by many years.

Things You'll Need

  • Greenhouse repair kit (optional)
  • Plastic greenhouse sheets
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Soap
  • Rag
  • Water
  • Long-life greenhouse repair tape

Instructions

      Follow the package instructions if you use a kit. Otherwise, cut out a patch of plastic sheeting at least 100 mm wider than the tear in each direction.

      Clean both sides of the plastic around the tear, both inside the greenhouse and outside. Use soap, water and a rag. Allow to dry.

      Apply the patch over the tear on the outside of the greenhouse. Affix it using the kit or apply greenhouse repair tape to completely cover one side of the patch. Peel off the adhesive tape backing and press the patch firmly over the tear, tape side down. Smooth out bubbles.

      Apply another patch from the inside of the greenhouse, following the same procedure as for the first patch.
