How to Landscape With Red Mulch

Mulching your flower and vegetable beds can benefit your landscaping while protecting the soil on your property. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), there are many benefits to spreading mulch on your landscape. Among the benefits are prevention of soil erosion, weed growth, filtration, moisture conservation and more. Mulch can be made of different-colored substances, but a particularly striking example is red mulch. Red mulch can be made of either bark chips or plastic and can be installed in almost any part of your landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out weed cloth in sections that will completely cover the area of landscape you wish to mulch by measuring the width and length of the area using the tape measure.

    • 2

Cut weed cloth to size according to your measurements.

    • 3

Install the weed cloth by laying it onto the desired area, tucking the ends under to create a clean look.

    • 4

Install plastic or brick edging, if desired, by pounding edging into the perimeter of the area using a rubber mallet. Brick can be stacked directly on top of the edges of the weed cloth.

    • 5

Apply red mulch to the desired area in your landscape using a wheelbarrow and shovel to spread the bark chips around. Gardening guidelines suggest mulching between 2 and 4 inches depth. Less than 2 inches may expose the roots of your landscape plants to sun damage, weeds, and pests. More than 4 inches may encourage root rot and weed growth.
