Garden Against the House Ideas

With a large backyard, gardens can be built in a variety of places but are commonly built against the house. The house wall protects them from the elements and animals and provides them with something to grow against. There are a number of different techniques you can employ when building a garden beside your house.
  1. Lattice

    • With the side of the house acting as one wall for the garden, lattice can be built around the other three sides, creating a wooden fence to protect the garden. This lattice height is up to you, but if you are growing fruits or vegetables, make it tall enough to keep rabbits or smaller rodents from climbing into it too easily, but low enough that it doesn't block your view from a nearby deck or window. Ivy can be grown on the lattice as well, making a structural addition off the side of the house appear entirely green after a few months of growth.

    Surround with Stones

    • Another popular way to create a garden off the side of the house is to surround it with large, heavy stones to hold in soil and the plants or vegetables growing within the garden itself. These stones can vary in size, shape and color, all depending on how they match the exterior decor of the house itself and the size of the garden you plan on building. Large stones will obviously hold more soil and can create a deeper garden bed then smaller stones. Stones work well for just about any garden as they appear to be an organic part of the yard, yet also create an attractive structure beside your home.

    Flower Gardens

    • Flowers growing in abundance in a garden beside your house will serve many purposes. They will add beauty and color, as the flowers grow up tall and bloom. They will will attract bees, butterflies and a variety of nectar-feeding insects, which can be both helpful and attractive. Look for hummingbirds--they're wonderful to watch just outside whatever window is nearest the flower garden. Plant different types of flowers that bloom at different times of the year so there will be a constant variation of color, birds, and insects in your flower garden.
