Homemade Raised Garden Beds

Raised garden beds can be the perfect solution to poor garden soil. Raised beds allow you to control the soil condition. You also can vary the soil and type of amendments from bed to bed, allowing for multiple crop growth. If you want a fun weekend project that benefits your green thumb, consider making your own raised garden bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a place for your bed. An ideal spot allows you to reach your raised garden bed from at least three sides. You may want to make multiple beds, so you can easily rotate crops, so consider that when looking for a place to build.

    • 2

Cut the two inch by six inch boards to at least 24 inches in length. You may have to adjust your cut size if your bed is slightly shorter or longer. Just ensure your cuts are flush on the ends.

    • 3

Place a level on each side to ensure the frame is level. Ensuring your frame is level will ensure your soil is the same height on each side.

    • 4

Place chicken wire on top of frame and cut to the size of the frame. Then, lay chicken wire on ground and place the frame over wire. The chicken wire can keep critters like gophers and rabbits from getting into your bed via an underground tunnel.

Attach a wooden stake at each corner of the bed, using nails. Make sure you place these stakes on the underside of the bed. The stakes will reinforce your frame, so it does not bend with the weight of the soil as you plant and adjust your raised garden bed. Flip the frame over and tap with a rubber mallet until secured in the ground. You can now fill your garden bed with soil.
