How to Make Cement Plant Urns

Grownups who loved playing with modeling clay as kids will love the concept of molding their own cement planters. The task sounds daunting, but is actually fairly easy. You can create planters and urns using almost anything as a mold. Forget about paying for and hauling a new planter or urn home from the home improvement store. Make your own planter right in your own backyard in the size and shape you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix two parts Portland cement with three parts peat moss, three parts perlite and one part reinforcing fibers in a wheelbarrow. Add water to create a substance that has a cottage cheese texture. Stir with a large stir stick and your hands. The mix is ready when you can form it into a ball.

    • 2

Pour the mixture through a screen or sieve to remove the large pieces of peat moss.

    • 3

Fill the mold with the cement mixture. Press it firmly into the mold to fill the entire space. Smooth the top with a trowel to create a level surface. Allow the mixture to cure for 48 hours. The cement mixture should be almost completely dry.

    • 4

      Remove the mold.

    • 5

Scrub the outside of the urn carefully with a stiff wire brush. Remove all loose particles and smooth the edges of the pot. Set the urn in a shady spot to cure for three weeks. This will allow the urn to completely set.

    • 6

Fill the urn with water every day for 10 days. This will remove lime and other harsh chemicals from the pot that would be harmful to your plants.

    • 7

Turn the pot over and drill drainage holes on the bottom of the planter.
