How to Make a Flower Bed Lawn

Choose a location for the flower beds such as a front yard space or along a backyard to draw your eye into the garden and frame the home. Space the flower bed around existing decorative features within the garden like arbors, paths and patios. Spacing the flowers around decorative elements helps to create a unified design.

Space out the beds and till the soil to a depth of 5 inches. Amend the soil with 3 inches of nutrient-rich compost and make sure all weeds and debris have been cleared out the beds.

Level the soil with a rake, making sure there is a slight grade along the perimeter of the beds to allow for water drainage. Grade the beds so the water runs in the directions of drainage swales or drains within the landscape.

Plant tall perennial flowers in the back and center of the beds and in clusters of three so they are seen from other areas of the garden and color is magnified.

Use native plants that thrive within your USDA plant hardiness zone to create a low-maintenance and hardy bed. Drought-tolerant plants keep watering down to a minimum and are ideal in hot climates.

Arrange evergreen shrubs and trees in the flower bed lawn to provide a backdrop for plantings and create shade to areas of the garden. Grow shade-loving plants around the base of the evergreens.

Create a garden pathway leading through the lawn to create easy access to the plants and flowers. Pebble paths are low maintenance and help provide drainage around the flower beds.

Cover the entire flower bed lawn with at least 2 inches of mulch or compost. Spread the mulch around the beds to help retain moisture, create even soil temperatures and prevent weeds.
