Rock Garden Shrubs

Rock gardens provide a tranquil landscaping feature for your yard. Typically, rock gardens will feature ground-cover plants and shrubs around the outer edges and build up to taller shrubs near the middle. This progression in height can add striking visual appeal to any property.
  1. Evergreens

    • Evergreen shrubs provide year-round color to your rock garden. During the spring and summer, the flowers on evergreens such as heather, rose daphne and true lavender can provide bursts of color.

    Deciduous Shrubs

    • Deciduous shrubs should be planted in your rock garden between April and July depending on the variety. These shrubs will bloom through the summer and lose their leaves every autumn. Alpine daphne, lowbush blueberry and mountain St. John's wort are excellent choices for deciduous shrubs in a rock garden.

    Ground Cover

    • Many alpine shrubs grow low to the ground, providing a good base for your garden. Blue buglewood, alpine pinks and aubrieta are all flowering mat shrubs that are suitable for a rock garden.
