Orange Blossom

• The fragrant orange blossom (Citrus sinensis) is the official state flower of Florida. The Florida Legislature designated the orange blossom the state flower in 1909. The orange tree bearing these ornate, white blossoms is indigenous to Southeast Asia and grow in abundance in central and southern Florida. Miami's subtropical climate mirrors Citrus sinensis' native growing conditions.

Day Blooming Jasmine

• Day blooming jasmine (Cestrum diurnum) is of the Solanaceae (nightshade) genus of tropical, flowering plants. The Miami-Dade County website places day blooming jasmine on its prohibited plant species list, and blames the heavily-fragrant flower for the respiratory problems of Florida residents. The plant's slender, white flowers appear in clusters and exudes its most pungent odor during the day. The solanine glyco alkaloids and atropine-like toxins in the fruit of this plant are poisonous to children and animals.

Mahoe

• Mahoe (Hibiscus tiliaceus) is a flowering tree from tropical seashores Africa and Polynesia. The tropical and subtropical regions in central and southern Florida as well as the Florida Keys provide ideal growing conditions for this aggressive tree. Mahoe produces large, trumpet-shaped, bright-yellow flowers with a garnet center that have the tendency to grow sideways or point downwards. Like other plants in the mallow family, the flowers take on different hues as they age. Mahoe has large, ivy-colored leaves robs its native Floridian competitors of needed sun. Miami-Dade County includes Mahoe on its list of invasive plant species.

Powerpuff

• Powerpuff (Mimosa strigillosa) takes it name from the pink, bubble-like shape of its inflorescence. Other names for this flowering plant include mimosa, sunshine mimosa and sensitive plant. Powerpuff's grows in all areas of the entire Sunshine State. Powerpuff grows best in full sun and with well-drained, sandy soils. This mat-forming groundcover frequently germinates along roadsides, hiking trails and at the edge of pine forests. Powerpuff is a small but hardy plant capable of enduring heavy foot traffic and lawn maintenance.
