How to Calculate How Much Lava Rock I Will Need

Lava rock is a type of decorative stone used to cover garden areas and minimize weed growth. As the name hints, lava rock is cooled lava from a volcano and is available in red or black. Lava rock pieces are irregular and shape and normally come in pieces between 3/4 inch to 1 1/4 inch thick. One of the major benefits of lava rock is that it has good drainage and packs down rather well.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area you intend to cover with lava rock.

    • 2

Determine the depth of rock you want for the area. Areas such as walkways and driveways, which will be walked upon, should have deeper layers of rock than less-traveled areas.

    • 3

Multiply the area by the desired thickness of rock to determine the cubic feet. For example, a 10-by-10 foot area with a desired thickness of 2 inches (10 feet X 10 feet X 0.167 feet) would be 16.7 cubic feet. Convert cubic feet to cubic yardage by dividing the cubic feet by 27. (16.7 cubic feet / 27 = 0.62 cubic yards).

Check the lava rock package for coverage per bag and purchase the appropriate amount.
