How to Build a Flower Bed With Leftover House Bricks

Anchor the flower bed with borders made from leftover house bricks. House bricks create a classic design to the flower bed while providing strong form in the landscape. House bricks are also sturdy and durable. To create a natural-looking design, incorporate a variety of bricks in varying colors. Instructions

    • 1

Draw out a rough design of the flower bed that details the placement of the leftover house bricks. Scale the bricks to the flower bed to ensure that the design of the bed is balanced.

    • 2

Sketch into the design essential outdoor features like drainage ditches and utility lines to decrease the chance of damaging them when you build the flower bed.

    • 3

Remove all debris from the building site, including small rocks, weeds and any debris that is not part of the design. Using a rake, clear out the space and tamp the soil down to create a compacted site.

    • 4

Add landscape edging between the flower bed and where the bricks are to be placed to ensure that the bricks don't budge or shift from the flower bed. Dig a trench down into the soil for the landscape edging material. Secure the edging into place with a rubber mallet.

    • 5

Cover landscape cloth over the space where you'll lay the house bricks. Do not lay the cloth over spots where flowers are intended to grow.

    • 6

Place the bricks over the landscape cloth. Set the largest or heaviest bricks on the bottom of the bed if you are using more than one row of bricks. Arrange the bricks until you have the desired placement in the flower bed.
