How to Design English Country Gardens

Designing an English country garden is not difficult if you keep in mind that they are often unstructured and appear as if planted by Mother Nature. These areas do not follow the Americanized versions of flower gardens. Tall flowers are not placed behind shorter ones, they are randomly positioned throughout the garden to give it a casual, relaxed ambiance. English country gardens often have areas where you can stroll or sit and enjoy the fragrances and beautiful colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the area for your English garden. You may have space only for a small garden or a larger area with meandering walkways and a mediation area.

    • 2

Purchase perennials and annuals. The most successful English gardens contain flowers that bloom randomly from the early spring until the fall. The homeowner can enjoy the lovely fragrances and colors throughout most of the year.

    • 3

Select old-fashioned flowers that are often depicted in English country gardens, such as foxgloves, Queen Anne's lace, delphinium, lavender, rose bushes and verbena.

    • 4

Purchase flowers that vary in color and height and place them randomly in the space. This will give your English country garden an unstructured appearance. Tall flower examples are lupine, foxglove, delphinium and rose bushes. Shorter blooming varieties are phlox, lavender and dianthus.

    • 5

Pick out fragrant flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to the area. This is often one of the most attractive aspects of an English country garden. Roses, lavender, phlox and regal lily are excellent fragrant choices.

    • 6

Purchase stepping stones, cobblestones or other unusual materials to create meandering paths if you have a large area available. Another idea is to use concrete to create sidewalks that curve throughout the garden.

    • 7

Choose appropriate seating for meditation or sitting areas, such as wrought iron or wood benches, Adirondack chairs or anything else that allows you to sit comfortably in the English country garden to soak up the serene and fragrant ambiance.
