DIY Concrete Landscape Borders

Concrete landscape borders add definition and structure to a lawn. They frame a walkway and help distinguish flower beds while reducing the amount of mulch or gravel that will spill onto your grass. Installing concrete borders is a home improvement project you can do yourself in a weekend. When complete, you'll have less maintenance for many years to come as concrete is extremely durable.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove grass and soil from the area you plan to lay the concrete border. Dig a 4-inch trench the width of the border, plus an additional 4 inches for the wooden frame.

    • 2

Construct your wood frames, also known as forms. Use wooden boards that are at least 6 inches wide and screw or nail them in the trenches side by side to the height of your border. You can set your concrete edging so it is flush with the ground to provide a seamless look between the grass and the plants, or raise the concrete for a more formal border.

    • 3

Attach 2-by-4 inch wood stakes to the forms. Stake the forms in the ground vertically or at a slight angle if you want the border to have a sloped look.

    • 4

Mix concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions. Add a colorant with metallic oxides to tint the mixture if desired.

    • 5

Use a trowel to pour concrete in the forms and smooth the edges. Wear work gloves so you don't get it on your hands.

    • 6

Embellish the border with decorations, placing special coins, rocks and leaves onto the concrete about 5 to 10 minutes after pouring it.

    • 7

Allow the concrete two full days to dry. Consider covering the concrete with burlap or building paper if it will dry under direct sunlight.
