Instructions

    • 1

Create a basic sketch of your landscape, and mark the areas where you plan to install edging. Draw the edging in different shapes--including round, rectangular and wave patterns--to find a design that fits your landscape.

    • 2

Measure the site where you want to add edging. If the area is round, outline the border with a garden hose, then measure the hose.

    • 3

Choose the type of faux stone you want. Materials to choose from include rubber, fiberglass, plaster and concrete. Consider choosing stones of different shapes and sizes, with variations in color and texture, if you want the edging to have a natural look.

    • 4

Dig a 4-inch deep trench where the edging will be. Remove all grass, weeds and root systems, but keep as much of the soil as possible. Spread a 1-inch layer of sand or pea gravel over the trench to provide drainage and stability for the fake stones.

    • 5

Arrange stones on one side of the trench. Stack flat stones or lean them against each other, then wedge small stones in the gaps. Step back to see if you're happy with the placement. Substitute stones of different sizes or adjust the positioning of each stone as desired.

    • 6

Press the stones firmly into the trench. Work your way around the trench, stepping back and adjusting as you go.

    • 7

Pack soil into crevices between the stones. Pour water over the edging, and when the dirt dries it will grip to the fake stones to hold them firmly in place.
